The Trump administration has accelerated its withdrawal from climate change agreements on the global stage, severing ties [https://www.argusmedia.com/en/news-and-insights/latest-market-news/2773260-us-exits-un-climate-change-bodies-multiple-ngos] this week with 66 international organizations focused on environmental and climate endeavors and agreements that Trump says "operate contrary to U.S. national interests" of focusing on oil, gas and mining development.

The agreements include the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change - the overarching global framework for climate action, encompassing the annual COP climate summits and the 2015 Paris climate agreement - and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change - the group considered the primary authority on climate change science.

The U.S. also will pull out of other U.N. bodies and non-governmental organizations including the International Renewable Energy Agency and the International Solar Alliance.

"Many international organizations now serve a globalist project rooted in the discredited fantasy of the 'End of History,' the White House said. "These organizations actively seek to constrain American sovereignty."

Climate advocates criticized the moves, with The Center for Climate and Energy Solutions said the moves will "isolate the United States further, undermine our global stature with allies around the globe, and cede the field to China."

Some international law experts said Trump's moves raise important legal questions [https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/cop/trump-withdrawal-bedrock-un-climate-treaty-raises-legal-questions-2026-01-08/] because case law is not clear on whether a president can unilaterally withdraw the country from a treaty that has been ratified by a majority of the U.S. Senate, referring to the UNFCC that was adopted more than 30 years ago.

The treaty requires wealthy industrialized countries to take measures to cut their emissions, adopt policies to limit greenhouse gas emissions, publicly report their emissions, and provide funding to help poorer nations address climate change; the withdrawal would take effect a year after notification.
