Chevron (NYSE:CVX), a global oil producer and refiner, held near unchanged in Friday's regular-session trading as of 10:19 a.m. ET after reporting its highest quarterly profit in at least six years. Adjusted earnings reached $12 billion, or $6.06 per share, compared with analysts' expectation of $5.56 per share. Higher oil prices and stronger refining conditions contributed to the result.

Upstream earnings increased approximately 200% from one year earlier to $8.2 billion. Chevron produced 4 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, including record U.S. output of 2.08 million barrels. Downstream profit reached $4.9 billion, its highest level since the beginning of the decade, as U.S. refinery throughput set a record and fuel shortages supported refining margins. The company also expects U.S. shale spending per barrel to be approximately 25% lower than during 2025.

Chevron repurchased $3 billion of shares and paid $3.5 billion in dividends during the quarter, returning a combined $6.5 billion to shareholders. The company also achieved $1.5 billion in synergies from its Hess acquisition six months earlier than planned, exceeding the initial $1 billion target by $500 million. Investors may view the near-flat share reaction as evidence that stronger earnings were balanced by uncertainty surrounding volatile oil prices and geopolitical disruption. Future production, refining margins and Chevron's ability to sustain Hess-related savings could determine whether the six-year profit high produces a more durable market response.
