What's next in freight transportation after Amazon's 'watershed' moment?

Amazon (AMZN [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/AMZN]) disrupted the freight transportation and logistics sectors on Monday after announcing a major new initiative supply chain program that allows businesses to use its logistics network as an end-to-end supply chain solution.

Crucially, the service integrates multiple steps that are typically handled by separate providers, including collecting goods from manufacturers, arranging international transportation, managing customs clearance, storing inventory in warehouses, and delivering products to customers. Morgan Stanley analyst Ravi Shanker noted the initiative will include customers who do not sell on Amazon and can support fulfillment for orders placed through other platforms such as direct-to-consumer websites or third-party marketplaces.

Nowak and his team think that the impact will likely be felt most acutely in the parcel space as well as air freight but also highlighted that other transportation modes, such as rail, trucking, ocean, and warehousing, will be under scrutiny for an impact.

Forward Air (FRWD [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/FRWD]) was down more than 20% in afternoon trading, while GXO Logistics (GXO [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/GXO]) shed 14.1%. FedEx (FDX [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/FDX]) was down 9.4%, and UPS (UPS [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/UPS]) declined 8.4% during the session. Amazon (AMZN [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/AMZN]) was up 1.2%.
