Putin: If U.S. has the right to buy fuel from us, why shouldn't India?

Russia's President Vladimir Putin asserted that India should enjoy the same privilege as the U.S. for buying Russian fuel, according to an interview with _India Today _that aired hours after he landed in New Delhi.

"The U.S. continues to buy nuclear fuel from us for their nuclear power plants," Putin pointed out. "That is also fuel. Energy. This is uranium for nuclear power plants that are functioning in the U.S."

"If the U.S. has the right to purchase fuel from us, why should India be deprived of such a right? That is a matter to be studied closely, and we are prepared to discuss that and debate that with President Trump," he added [https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/if-us-has-right-to-buy-fuel-from-us-why-shouldnt-india-have-the-same-privilege-putin-calls-out-hypocrisy-2830923-2025-12-04].

Russia currently supplies around 20%-30% of enriched uranium product used in the U.S. and Europe, according to the Department of Energy. The U.S. will completely ban all uranium imports from Russia by 2028.

The Trump administration imposed punitive tariffs on Indian goods because of India's ongoing purchases of Russian oil. Since then, India has scaled back these imports.

The Russian leader arrived in India on Thursday for a two-day state visit, his first trip to the country in four years.

Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to expand economic cooperation across sectors from defense to shipping, and accelerate progress toward the $100B bilateral trade target by 2030.

Putin also said Russia was "ready to continue uninterrupted fuel shipments" to India.
