ECB ramps up efforts to assess climate, nature risks when setting monetary policy

An unprecedented heatwave has hit parts of Europe, with Spain, England, France, and Italy seeing record temperatures for this time of the year. Meanwhile, Germany, Greece, Turkey have been battling wildfires.

"As a result of human-induced climate change, extreme heat is becoming more frequent and intense," the UN's World Meteorological Organization noted, adding that more than two thirds of the most severe heatwaves in Europe since 1950 have occurred since 2000.

In this backdrop, the European Central Bank this week committed [https://www.ecb.europa.eu/press/key/date/2025/html/ecb.sp250704~167d74e3c3.en.html] to fully take into account the implications of climate change and nature degradation for monetary policy.

In an interview with _Bloomberg_, European Central Bank official Frank Elderson warned of the impact of heatwaves on the region's economy.

"We have progressed in understanding that accounting for the climate and nature crises is relevant," he said. "If you think about the exceptionally hot summer of 2022, food-price inflation was up between 0.4 and 0.9 percentage points."

Elderson added [https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-07-04/ecb-warns-of-impact-of-heat-waves-on-inflation-economic-growth] that the ECB is still studying the impacts of events like the summer of 2022 on inflation and GDP to get a sense of what's ahead.
