EU said to weigh €93B tariffs on U.S. in response to Trump's Greenland threat

The European Union is weighing imposing €93B ($108.2B) worth of duties on U.S. imports in response to President Donald Trump's latest tariff threat to countries that sent troops to Greenland, _The Financial Times _reported.

The tariffs had been prepared last year, but were suspended till Feb. 6 under the EU's trade deal with the U.S. The EU's 27 ambassadors discussed reactivating the tariffs on Sunday, officials involved in the talks told _FT_.

They also discussed the bloc's "anti-coercion instrument," also called the trade bazooka, which can limit the access of U.S. companies to the internal market.

France, which has backed using the ACI, and Germany are coordinating a joint response. Their finance ministers will discuss the matter in Berlin on Monday and then travel to Brussels for a meeting with their European counterparts.

But most EU member states are calling for dialogue with Trump before threatening retaliation. "We need to get the temperature down," an EU diplomat told [https://www.ft.com/content/b2872a49-3d43-4a55-a483-de7b19e8e436] the _FT_.

The proposed retaliation measures are aimed at giving EU leaders leverage when they meet Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week.

"In 2025, Europe generally avoided retaliatory measures, recognizing the harm tariffs can do to the domestic economy," said UBS' Paul Donovan. "Targeted measures, including the restricting of U.S. social media providers and other services, are now more likely."
