Gen Z protests against governments are spreading across countries, with the latest unrest calling for Peru's new president Jose Jeri to step down.

The Peruvian government is expected to declare a state of emergency soon, after overnight anti-government protests turned violent, with one person killed and hundreds injured.

Gen Z activists have led protests against corruption and rising crime in Peru over the past month. The protests led to the midnight ouster of former President Dina Boluarte last Thursday.

Jerí was sworn in as president soon after, but protesters have called for him to step down as well. Jerí has refused to resign.

Gen Z-led protests against corruption, economic failures, and poor employment and living conditions have broken out across the world this year.

These protests gained wider popularity following the unrest in Nepal last month, which forced its prime minister to resign. Its next leader was chosen through a poll on Discord - a messaging app popular with online gamers.

More recently, Madagascar's president was forced out of power this week. A military coup followed, with leader Michael Randrianirina being sworn in as president on Friday.

Gen Z, referring to people born roughly between 1996 and 2010, is the first generation to grow up entirely in the internet age.

"What connects these youth-led protests is a shared sense that traditional political systems aren't responsive to their generation's concerns, whether that's corruption, climate change, or economic inequality," said Sam Nadel, director of the nonprofit Social Change Lab.
