Trump says U.S. nearing deal with Japan for Alaska LNG exports

President Donald Trump said the U.S. and Japan are nearing a deal to jointly export liquefied natural gas from Alaska, which could potentially revive a long-stalled project.

Speaking to lawmakers, Trump said Japan is “forming a joint venture with us in Alaska for the LNG,” though he offered no further details and it’s unclear if the deal is formalized.

The remarks came shortly after his announcement of a broader trade agreement with Japan, featuring a 15% reciprocal tariff on the country’s exports to the U.S. and a reported cut in auto duties.

"We concluded the one deal ... and now we're going to conclude another one because they're forming a joint venture with us at, in Alaska, as you know, for the LNG," Trump told lawmakers at the White House. "They're all set to make that deal now."

The long-stalled $44 billion Alaska LNG export project could be one of the beneficiaries of any US-Japan trade deal, as it has struggled for decades to secure firm contracts and investment. In April, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said the project should be part of a broader trade agreement with the U.S.

Glenfarne Group is the majority owner and lead developer of the Alaska LNG project.
