BlackRock private credit fund valuation practices under investigation - report

BlackRock (BLK [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/BLK]) private credit fund valuation practices are under scrutiny by federal prosecutors, people with knowledge of the matter, who asked not to be identified discussing a private matter, told Bloomberg News [https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-05-15/blackrock-private-credit-fund-s-valuations-being-probed-by-doj].

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, which encompasses the boroughs of Manhattan and the Bronx in New York City, was said to be seeking information about BlackRock TCP Capital Corp (TCPC [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/TCPC]).

The investigation included calling BlackRock executives for questioning, according to one of the people.

Attorney Jay Clayton had said in November that he was concerned about how firms value private assets, noting that financial regulators and the department were looking at those, the May 15, Friday report noted.

The BlackRock fund had disclosed [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4542575-blackrock-tcp-capital-stock-plunges-after-loan-writedowns] in January writedowns on troubled portfolio investments. The middle-market debt fund had said the writedowns were expected to reduce net value per share by about 19% as of the end of 2025.

In March, the company wrote down [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4561246-blackrock-writes-down-a-second-private-loan-to-zero] the value of another private loan to zero three months after valuing it at 100 cents on the dollar.
