Trump says Canada’s Palestine stance could jeopardize trade deal

U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Canada’s decision to support Palestinian statehood, warning it could complicate future trade relations between the two countries.

“Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh’ Canada!!!” Trump posted on Truth Social.

The comment comes as Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney prepares to formally recognize Palestine during his speech at the upcoming UN General Assembly. The move follows a joint declaration signed by France and 14 other countries, signaling growing international momentum toward recognizing an independent Palestinian state.

Trump's remarks suggest that Canada’s diplomatic stance may have direct economic consequences, with potential trade agreements now at risk. The President signaled last week that trade talks with Canada are not currently a priority for his administration, suggesting he may opt to maintain existing tariffs rather than pursue a new agreement.

Earlier this month, President Trump announced a 35% tariff on Canadian imports, warning of additional hikes if Ottawa retaliates. The tariffs, outlined in a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney and posted on Truth Social, are set to take effect on August 1.
