Borrowing from Trump's DOGE: Mamdani unveils COGE plan for NYC

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Thursday introduced the so-called Commission of Government Efficiency, or COGE, a new initiative designed to streamline how City Hall manages public funds.
“This commission will find ways for our city to work smarter, faster and more efficiently for working people,” Mamdani shared on social media, adding that New Yorkers deserve a government that handles money as carefully as they do.
The initiative's branding naturally invites comparisons to Tesla (TSLA [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/TSLA]) and SpaceX (SPCX [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/SPCX]) CEO Elon Musk’s now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. While the Trump administration's controversial federal project sought to aggressively slash $2T before collapsing amid legal and cabinet disputes, Mamdani's local effort is focused on clearing outdated bureaucratic hurdles that delay essential infrastructure and city services.
Led by former U.S. Ambassador to South Africa Patrick Gaspard, with Ann Cheng proposed as executive director, COGE will hold 10 public hearings across the city. The final efficiency proposals will be presented directly to voters on the November ballot.
This push for fiscal streamlining follows Mamdani's recently unveiled $124.7B city budget, which includes a $4B infusion in state aid.
New York lawmakers recently approved [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4597856-new-york-approves-tax-on-luxury-2nd-homes-as-mamdani-pushes-wealth-agenda] a new tax targeting high-value second homes in New York City, handing Mamdani a political victory as he searches for new revenue to support an expansive affordability platform and close budget gaps.
