Thailand aims to reduce its $46 billion trade surplus with the U.S. by 70% within five years, reaching balance in seven to eight years, in its latest attempts to avert Trump's steep 36% levies, _Bloomberg_ reported, citing Thailand's Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira.

The South Asian nation also aims at offering greater market access for U.S. farm and industrial goods, along with increased purchases of energy and Boeing (BA [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/BA]) jets, the report said [https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-07-06/thailand-to-offer-us-more-trade-concessions-to-avert-36-tariff].

If the offer is accepted, Thailand would be able to remove import taxes and non-tariff barriers for the majority of commodities right away, while progressively lifting limitations on a select few.

Pichai said Thailand is looking for a 10% best-case rate, but that even a range of 10% to 20% would be acceptable. He expects to submit the revised offer before July 9, the report added.

This follows Pichai's meeting with U.S. Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Michael Faulkender and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer last Thursday for the ministerial-level discussions on tariff issues.

Washington has threatened to impose a 36% levy on Thailand if a deal cannot be reached by the July 9 deadline. The 90-day pause capped tariffs at 10% for most nations.
