U.S. stocks mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.98%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Telecoms and Industrials sectors led shares higher while losses in the Basic Materials, Healthcare and Financials sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.98%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.40%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.18%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA), which rose 4.01% or 6.58 points to trade at 170.65 at the close. Meanwhile, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) added 0.53% or 2.67 points to end at 505.69 and Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) was up 0.27% or 0.61 points to 226.30 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which fell 3.20% or 10.27 points to trade at 310.65 at the close. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) declined 3.10% or 11.47 points to end at 358.64 and Unitedhealth Group (NYSE:UNH) was down 2.95% or 8.87 points to 291.71.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Super Micro Computer Inc (NASDAQ:SMCI) which rose 6.92% to 53.17, First Solar Inc (NASDAQ:FSLR) which was up 6.89% to settle at 171.92 and Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which gained 6.41% to close at 155.61.

The worst performers were State Street Corp (NYSE:STT) which was down 7.29% to 102.01 in late trade, Agilent Technologies Inc (NYSE:A) which lost 5.95% to settle at 112.94 and BlackRock Inc (NYSE:BLK) which was down 5.88% to 1,046.16 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:CYCC) which rose 270.39% to 12.26, Longevity Health Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:XAGE) which was up 125.33% to settle at 5.96 and Trident Digital Tech Holdings Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:TDTH) which gained 59.03% to close at 0.73.

The worst performers were Picocela Inc ADR (NASDAQ:PCLA) which was down 76.11% to 0.81 in late trade, Briacell Therapeutics Corp (NASDAQ:BCTX) which lost 61.78% to settle at 0.77 and Ryvyl Inc (NASDAQ:RVYL) which was down 48.14% to 0.34 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2262 to 513 and 69 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2482 fell and 857 advanced, while 123 ended unchanged.

Shares in NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) rose to all time highs; up 4.01% or 6.58 to 170.65. Shares in Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) rose to all time highs; gaining 0.53% or 2.67 to 505.69. Shares in Briacell Therapeutics Corp (NASDAQ:BCTX) fell to all time lows; falling 61.78% or 1.25 to 0.77. Shares in Ryvyl Inc (NASDAQ:RVYL) fell to all time lows; losing 48.14% or 0.31 to 0.34.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.05% to 17.38.

Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.70% or 23.58 to $3,335.52 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 0.39% or 0.26 to hit $66.72 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.51% or 0.35 to trade at $68.86 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.55% to 1.16, while USD/JPY rose 0.78% to 148.87.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.58% at 98.33.
