Taiwan overtakes India as world's fifth-largest stock market as TSMC surges

Led by the explosive growth of TSMC (TSM [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/TSM]), the world's largest semiconductor manufacturer, Taiwan has overtaken India to claim a larger total stock market valuation.

The island’s market capitalization climbed to $4.95T as of Monday, according to data compiled by _Bloomberg_. India’s value has dropped to $4.92T. Taiwan’s stock market is now the fifth largest in the world, behind only the US, mainland China, Japan, and Hong Kong.

Taiwan’s rise in the global equity rankings has been fueled primarily by TSMC, which now makes up roughly 42% of the benchmark index, highlighting a high level of market concentration. The chipmaker’s stock has surged 49% this year, driven by strong momentum in the artificial intelligence sector, where its semiconductors hold a leading market position.

“Taiwan’s rising market capitalization is fundamentally a reflection of its heavy concentration in tech hardware, which is currently at the center of the AI investment cycle [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4596160-amd-ramps-up-taiwan-production-capacity-amid-cpu-demand-surge],” said Yi Ping Liao, a fund manager at Franklin Templeton, according to _Bloomberg._

“Markets with limited exposure to tech hardware are increasingly being overshadowed by tech hardware–heavy markets such as Taiwan and Korea.” Additionally, new regulations are also in TSMC’s favor [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4575561-taiwan-semi-raises-2026-outlook-after-q1-profit-surges-amid-ai-demand]. Taiwan’s financial regulator last month increased the limit that domestic funds can invest in a single stock.

The change may help lure in more than $6B of inflows to Taiwan, JPMorgan Chase & Co. said in a research note.
