Northern Dynasty Minerals (NYSE:NAK [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/NAK]) +23.2% to a five-year high $1.77 in early trading Monday after saying it is negotiating with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to explore a potential settlement [https://seekingalpha.com/pr/20156532-northern-dynasty-update-on-negotiations-with-epa] related to the agency's previous veto of the Pebble project in Alaska.

EPA "officials were briefed on the litigation and have been actively considering the agency decisions," Northern Dynasty (NYSE:NAK [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/NAK]) quoted from a July 3 EPA court filing. "Agency officials remain open to reconsideration, and defendants and [the Pebble partnership] are negotiating to explore a potential settlement."

The filing added that the discussions involve a new submission from Pebble that could inform a reconsideration of the EPA's prior decision.

The Pebble deposit, near Alaska's Bristol Bay, is considered one of the world's biggest undeveloped of copper, gold and molybdenum resources, but its development has faced significant legal hurdles over environmental concerns.
