Denmark sends additional troops to Greenland

Denmark has deployed additional military forces to Greenland after President Donald Trump refused to rule out using force to seize control of the Arctic island.

Several aircraft carrying Danish troops and military equipment landed in Greenland on Monday, with soldiers and the head of Denmark’s army arriving in the Greenlandic capital Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq, the FT reported. The deployment adds to more than 200 troops already stationed in the autonomous territory.

The move follows Trump’s threat to impose additional 10% tariffs on eight nations --including Germany, France, and the UK -- that participated in a multinational military exercise led by Danish soldiers on the island over the weekend.

When asked in an NBC interview whether he would use force to acquire Greenland, Trump responded: “No comment.” Asked if he would follow through on tariff threats against Europe, he said: “I will, 100 percent.”

The U.S. president’s aggressive stance has sparked fears of a trade war with Europe and plunged transatlantic relations into their deepest crisis in decades. Germany and France have called for a “clear” European response, with German finance minister Lars Klingbeil declaring: “We will not be blackmailed.”

EU officials have prepared detailed retaliation options, including potential levies on €93 billion of US goods. However, they are holding back their most potent measure -- the anti-coercion instrument that could limit US technology companies’ access to the EU market, known as the "bazooka" -- hoping for a diplomatic solution during talks at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
