U.S. should treat Taiwan as a partner, not as an adversary, says AmCham

The American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan (AmCham) urged Washington to treat Taiwan as a partner rather than an adversary in its 2025 White Paper. The group called for the removal of new and proposed tariffs on Taiwanese goods, the restoration of high-level cabinet visits, and the finalization of a double taxation agreement between the two sides.
AmCham Taiwan's newly appointed president, Carl Wegner, emphasized that Taiwan is a dependable ally for the U.S., a vital democratic partner in the Indo-Pacific region, an investor in American industries, and an essential contributor to supply chain stability.
"As the U.S. works to bolster domestic manufacturing and reduce supply chain vulnerabilities, it's in America's interest to ensure that Taiwan is treated as a partner, not as an adversary," the AmCham president told reporters in Taipei.
Wegner said that he will be leading a delegation to Washington later this month for "door knock" discussions.
"Maintaining tariffs on semiconductors, advanced machinery and electronics raises costs for American businesses and consumers while sending a conflicting signal about the strength of U.S.-Taiwan ties," said the chamber, which represents 500 American and international companies with operations in Taiwan.
"While the change in U.S. administration introduces new dynamics, Taiwan must remain proactive in pursuing a comprehensive and reciprocal trade agreement. Measures should be taken to advance shared economic interests and create goodwill in Washington but also strengthen Taiwan’s own economic resilience by deepening access to the U.S. market, reinforcing supply chain security, and demonstrating Taiwan’s commitment to high-standard trade practices." the White Paper read [https://amcham.com.tw/2025/06/2025-taiwan-white-paper-overview/].
So far, neither Taiwan nor the U.S. has provided significant public updates on the status of the ongoing tariff discussions.
